Expanding economic opportunities and ensuring more Americans can get ahead are goals that unite our country.
When it comes to creating local jobs and expanding those local economic opportunities, one model surpasses all others: franchising. And now, the stories of America’s franchisers are being told as part of an exciting new venture: Open for Opportunity.
Recent research has shown that local franchises – in which a franchisee does business under a franchisor's name and system – create 2.3 times as many jobs as non-franchise businesses and produce sales that are 1.8 times higher.
Beyond those statistics, the sector is home to franchisees of color and female owners at disproportionately higher rates – around 26 percent of franchises are owned by people of color, compared with 17 percent of independent businesses generally. And Black-owned franchises earn 2.2 times more than Black-owned independent businesses on average.
Franchises also offer strong pay and benefits packages to empower our employees – offering 2.2 – 3.4 percent higher wages than similar non-franchises. More than 65 percent of franchise workers are offered health insurance, a greater proportion than among small businesses in general. And more than three-quarters of franchise workers (76 percent) are offered vacation, holiday, and sick leave.
In short, the franchise model is working, boosting job-growth and empowering employees – for our families, our neighbors, and our communities.
Since its founding, the International Franchise Association (IFA) has worked relentlessly to advance the future of franchising, which we believe is the best economic business model to create prosperity and opportunity for people from all walks of life.
IFA members are helping veterans transition from military to civilian life, empowering them with new and exciting career paths. They are creating opportunities for people from all different backgrounds to improve their livelihoods. They are investing in their local communities by giving their time, resources, and hearts back to those around them.
And they are creating more equitable and inclusive teams that support employees and drive success.
As a nation, we have endured a challenging few years that have only underscored the importance of our local franchise businesses to the resiliency of our communities.
America’s families can rest assured that the 775,000 local franchise businesses around our country are open for opportunity – and ready to help in every community.
Through our campaign, Open for Opportunity, IFA is lifting up our member stories so that all Americans know what we know – that franchising empowers local business owners to create opportunities for themselves and those around them.
